Dance at this year’s Festival seemed exceptionally introspective: from taking a long, refreshing drink of itself, to explorations of contemporary South African identities in all their guises, it has been one helluva ride.

The production begins and ends with the thundering, booming, gnashing sounds of earth and rock, within which five dancers move jerkily into life. The dark, bare stage becomes the elemental environment that casts evolutionary transition and human experience into slanted planes of light. Desert Crossings’ preoccupations with humanity and heritage – both natural and cultural – produce sweeping visions of time, place, transformation, relationship and dispossession.
