Andrew Buckland has been a fixture of the annual arts carnival in Grahamstown for yonks. Now aged 61, Buckland had wowed audiences with his remarkable prowess as a physical actor and mime. last year, after a run of playing down and outs finding solace in a bottle, he appeared in an oddly titled play directed by Sylvaine Strike. Bucklands’ performance in Tabacco and the Harmful Effects Thereof, which returned to Festival again this year, is revolutionary. Buckland’s turn as Ivan demonstrates new depth and vulnerabilities in his range as an actor.

Tobacco and the Harmful Effects Thereof is, so to speak, a metaphor for marriage in this wondrous adaptation of the Anton Chekov play of a similar name. Under the consummate direction of Sylvaine Strike, Andrew Buckland delivers a performance that keeps the audience on the brink of a precipice between laughter and tears for more than one hour.

Even if you know nothing about South African theatre you have probably heard the name Andrew Buckland flung around somewhere. The National Arts Festival is, once again, lucky enough to host the immensely talented Buckland and Liezl de Kock, who completes the Crazy in Love duo.
