The Standard Bank Village Green Fair is home to around 300 stalls brought to you by top-quality crafters, traders, food vendors and artists – but as of this year it will have a new home.
The thriving market has now moved off of the Rhodes University Great Field and onto Victoria Girls’ High School’s campus on Beaufort Street with a second entrance on Huntley Road. Be sure to get there early as parking seems to be rather limited.
There are a wide selection of food stalls available Greek food at Gyros to artisanal Mexican food at Dos Chidos. For those who are vegan and vegetarian Govindas amazing dhal and rice with two sabji (vegetable) sides along with an incredible chickpea fudge to end off the hearty meal. For those who have more of a sweet tooth the chocolate spring rolls at Makoy’s food truck melts in your mouth and can be perfectly paired with one of their velvety smooth Hot Chocolates.
In the spirit of refreshing and revitalizing what the Village Green has to offer patrons, the beer tent is now sponsored by Jack Daniels. Entrance to the tent is free and plays host to live music by various fringe artists throughout the day and is open until 22:00.
The new venue has been met with plentiful enthusiasm by Fest-goers saying that the change has brought a new atmosphere to the market. The layout is now compact and has lead to better organisation.
Village Green is definitely a fun way to spend time between shows, with plenty of activities on offer. If you’re keen to relax, then simply grab a bean bag in front of the Standard Bank stage and enjoy performances by daring members of the public, the house band, and various jazz artists.
The Standard Bank Village Green Fair is open every day of the National Arts Festival from 09:00 to 17:00.
