Simply Broadway, simply brillaint

“This one’s for you,” Brett de Groot says, after spotting my reluctant hand go up to answer his search for any press in the house. He launches into a brilliantly executed song and tap dance routine to the tune of Leaning on a Lamppost, concludes the dance, points at me and says, “Review that, bitch!”

De Groot’s sass and charm keeps the audience transfixed for the duration of the performance. Coupled with Kay Mosiane’s full, powerful vocals, Simply Broadway offers its audience a well-written, laugh-outloud script accompanied by a wide selection of Broadway hits.

The duo interact with the audience throughout the performance, whether with a mischievous wink during a particularly racy line, or by straddling a member of the front row to add effect to a naughty song. At one point an eager young audience member is hauled onto stage and “made-over” during Wicked’s song Popular, her facial expressions adding a generous dose of interactive humour to De Groot and Mosiane’s theatrics.

Pianist Jaques du Plessis doesn’t say a word, but manages to make playing the piano amusing and endearing, eliciting loud applause from the crowd after dramatically drawing out the last notes of a song.

The show ends with SMASH’s Big Finish, and the duo exiting dramatically, down the aisle and through the back door. As we shuffle out of the Beethoven Room, I sense a tangibly lighter mood than when I walked in.
