Short.Sharp.Stories to award R20 000

Short.Sharp.Stories – a literary initiative sponsored by the National Arts Festival – will announce the winner of the 2015 Award at the Eden Grove complex on 10 July. This year’s anthology, Incredible Journey, will also be released and available for purchase.

This year’s anthology for Short.Sharp.Stories is titled Incredible Journey.

Short.Sharp.Stories issued a call for submissions on the Incredible Journey theme last year and received short stories from all over South Africa. Incredible Journey is the third anthology produced by the organisation. Bloody Satisfied and Adults Only, anthologies from 2013 and 2014 respectively, have been well-received by the literary community. Sarah Lotz described Bloody Satisfied as “a cracking, eclectic South African collection with stories of stunning originality and skill,” and Liesl Jobson called Adults Only “a gem”.

Over the years, Short.Sharp.Stories has attracted entries from some of the top names in SA fiction, including Roger Smith, Yewande Omotoso, Ken Barris and Sally-Ann Murray. Renowned crime fiction writer Joanne Hichens returns as the editor of the anthology for 2015. She was impressed by the variety of “incredible journeys” that authors brought to the table. “In general, there was plenty of politics and dystopian stuff. The range really was incredible, every sort of vehicle and travel was represented, and the imagination shown by writers was extraordinary,” she says.

However, all of the stories included in the anthology share a very strong local flavor.

“This is the only project of its kind which is geared towards the particularly South African story,” explains Hichens. “We publish stories which are South African in tone and content. We are a country like no other, with a history which has shaped who we are, and we want that diversity to be reflected. ”

The shortlisted authors are Andrew Salomon, Bridget Pitt, Lidudumalingani and Bobby Jordan. After the award announcement and the launch of Incredible Journey, Short. Sharp.Stories will set about curating stories for their fourth anthology.

“The theme will be humour. We’ve done crime and sex, and Incredible Journey seemed to have a more serious bias, so we’d like to encourage writers to have a little fun. The fourth title will be DIE LAUGHING, stories of wit, satire and humour.”
